Fox Thermal FT1 Mass Flowmeter on a Biogas to Grid

Background

Process Instruments were assigned the task of supplying and installing the industry leading Fox Thermal FT1 mass flowmeter on a Biogas to Grid plant. This client has plants located all over the UK and required precision instruments to accurately read the gas flow rate of its biogas.

Challenge

The difficulty with this type of work and implementing the correct instrumentation involves the requirement for a highly accurate flow measurement. As the flows are relatively low pressure but the volume of gas can be high in pressure rate, there is a requirement for precise and repeatable results.

Furthermore, the hazardous gas that’s being measured requires the need for stringent safety precautions.

Importantly the biogas being measured is a combination of CH4 (Methane) , CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and N2 (Nitrogen). The instruments employed can be adjusted efficiently and filtrate the various constituents accurately and safely.

Solution

Process Instruments recommended the Fox Thermal FT1 Mass Flowmeter for its optimum accuracy of the measure flow rate, for example from landfill to plant as well being able to measure effectively the constituents of the biogas. The well established instruments also hold ATEX and EXd certificates and have no moving parts so it’s straightforward to check ‘zero’ and verify flow in situ.

Importantly the Fox Thermal FT1 Mass Flowmeter is easy to clean as there is a build of tar in this particular process.

Once the instrument is calibrated, Process Instruments will check annually and adjust gas mix accordingly so this is a very low maintenance and systematic process.

Result

Biogas Plant Manager says: “Working with Process Instruments has been effortless and smooth, from the installation of our Fox Thermal FT1 Mass Flowmeter, the calibration and follow up customer service and support; our experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Efficiency in the measuring of our output at the plant has been greatly increased and the low maintenance and competence
of the instrumentation is remarkable.”
